Unit-1

Number System

Base/Radix-: Base or Radix used to tell about how many different symbols present in any Number System.

Base/Radix                                         Possible Range

1- Binary                                    2                                            0 or1

2- Decimal                                10                                            0,1.......9

3- Octal                                     8                                              0,1.......7

4- Hexadecimal                        16                                              0,1....9,A,B,C,D,E,F

Note- A=10,B=11,C=12,D=13,E=14,F=15

-> Each Hexa digit is 4bits.

ex.   (2E)16 = (0010 1110)2

-> Each octa digit is 3bits.

Ex.   (35)8 = (011 101)2

Note --> Maximum value of symbol = Base-1

               or Base of any number system = maximum value of symbol +1

Examples

Identify the base of Number system

1- [2,4,3,6,5]   so here maximum number is 6 so base = 6+1=7

so base can be 7,8,9......

2- [9,2,0,4,7] here maximum number is 9 so base =9+1=10

so base can be 10,11,12,13.....

Note--> BASE >=MAXIMUM NUMBER +1
